Concert 8th July 21.30

FROM THE BAROQUE TO THE MODERN DAY

By the ensemble « Eclair »

The Ensemble Eclair was created in 2011 and comprises four talented young musicians from the Aude who were all trained (and won prestigious awards) at the Toulouse conservatoire. To promote the trombone as widely as possible, they perform an impressive range of musical genres, from Renaissance to the modern day and from composers including Pachelbel, Haendel, Scheidt, Mozart, Georges Bizet, Charles Trénet etc.

The first part of the concert is a Baroque programme interpreted by the sackbut, an essential instrument of Renaissance and early Baroque music and a forerunner to the trombone. The pieces selected include the popular and well-known “Pachelbel’s Canon”. This series of canon variations was popularised and arranged for a variety of instruments.

The second part of the programme features pieces from the 19th century to the modern day and includes Antonín Dvořák’s “Humoresque”, short mood and humorous pieces that are American in variety and inspiration, and Hoagy Carmichael’s 1930 composition “Georgia on my Mind”, recognised for its 1960 interpretation by Ray Charles and since 1979 as the official anthem of the state of Georgia.

Through the selected pieces, the listener will discover the richness and virtuosity of the trombone, an instrument that is often associated with an accompanying role but which here assumes the role of soloist.
